about

'Hot Bowl Of Marbles :(' embodies the first stage in the transition. It’s more or less a personal narrative about overthinking, anxiety, isolation, self-loathing and the struggle to pursue positive thoughts versus negative ones. The song also lightly touches on coping with knowledge that can make living day to day life difficult, e.g. “i have an irrational fear of linear time” can be crudely interpreted as I’m afraid to die before my time, but to me it also means “I get anxious thinking that time isn’t cyclical” because the belief that “everything that could ever happen does happen and happens simultaneously forever in infinite universes” is just one way I cope with living. Still, I’m afraid of wasting my life and missing my chance. The second verse works closer to pondering the ego, recognizing that each of our individual experiences exist as a thread in the fabric of mass consciousness that engulfs the cosmos, ultimate truths and how embrace them to either distract yourself from your demons and ego or face them head on like the three songs after this do. When we were demoing this song Taylor came up with the name as a working title until the lyrics would be written, but I thought that the name worked well for the lyrics I ended up with so we kept it.

Fun fact: The first draft of lyrics were about the 2016 elections, but I couldn’t find the passion in my words that did justice to the instrumental. With the exception of the chorus “Build a wall, draw the line that divides the light” I gave it a complete rewrite and transformed the meaning of the chorus. That line originally was about discrimination and lies, but with the rewritten verses it’s about isolating yourself from the bad (and good) of the world.

lyrics

\\\\Hot Bowl Of Marbles:(////

I have an irrational fear of linear time
Unearthing a secret is the ultimate crime

I hope you leave me pining for clarity
Soak my perceptive screen
Electromagnetic filters leave me blinded by earthly greed
Thanks to a life of conditioning
I block off my alien needs

Build a wall
Draw the line
That divides
The light

Spacetime is a single dimension
But not a path to mental elation
Embrace your Dionysian tendencies
Honor your isolation

I have an irrational fear of linear time
Unearthing a secret is the ultimate crime

Egos allude to separation
The object and observer constantly exist in cannon
Don't mistake an excuse for an explanation
My dream state is my counterweight
My truths are trustworthy

Build a wall
Draw the line
That divides
The light

Spacetime is a single dimension
But not a path to mental elation
Embrace your Dionysian tendencies
Honor your isolation
